Mazda 3 Hatchback Expert Review

The largest hatchback in Mazda’s UAE as well as global lineup, the Mazda 3 has been given a significant update, giving it a sleeker and more premium look than ever before. The UAE market gets the Mazda 3 in a single variant, which gets only one petrol automatic powertrain and a total of nine colour options – Machine Grey, Soul Red, Snowflake White, Sonic Silver, Titanium Flash, Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black, Arctic White, and Polymetal Grey.

Interior

Along with the exterior, even the interior cabin of the Mazda 3 has become much more upmarket and feels as if it belongs to one segment above. The interior gets a rich looking dual-tone black and burgundy theme with leather inserts and a curvy theme for the dashboard.

Both the three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel as well as TFT instrument console make up for a classy looking cockpit, and so is the minimalist theme for the centre console of the dashboard. There is a neat and well-laid touchscreen infotainment system tucked within a scooped housing on the upper layer of the dashboard. The centre console gets small controls for automatic climate control, below which flows the transmission tunnel.

Complete with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, 8.8-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push-button start with keyless entry, cruise control, and electrically adjustable driver’s seat, the Mazda 3 feels rich, a feeling which only gets better with the immense space levels on the inside.

Exterior

The Mazda 3 has set the bars higher when it comes to sheer visual appeal, with the striking aerodynamic design being a solid head turner. The sleek-looking silhouette with the elongated stance surely manages to give the Mazda 3 a premium air.

With a wide stance which is quite evident when you look at the Mazda 3 head-on, the hatchback’s prominent look becomes even more well-heeled with the presence of the traditional large Mazda family grille which has tapered edges but a slightly rounded look. The all-black grille has its edges extended towards the headlamps, which have become thinner than ever before and gets all LED lighting pattern.

The sporty essence of the side profile of the Mazda 3 is all due to the smooth curvy roofline, big round wheel arches, and door-mounted rearview mirrors. The wide-body design post the rear door might look a bit disproportionate to some, but it surely gives a long look to the Mazda 3.

At the rear, the Mazda 3 has got a very coupe-like look with a highly rakish rear windscreen with a big sporty roof spoiler. The boot lid has a clean design with rounded and horizontally stretched LED tail lamps shaped like bird’s eyes. The high loading lip for the boot accentuates its squat stance even more.

Ride & Handling

Mazdas are known to handle brilliantly with taut steering and suspension setups, and the Mazda 3 follows the tradition with being equipped with Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus technology on board. However, the ride quality is slightly on the firmer side, thanks to the stiff setup.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Under the hood of the Mazda 3 sits a 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is paired here to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces a maximum power output of 153 PS, while the peak torque output stands at 200 Nm, with a promising fuel efficiency of 16.8 kmpl.

Braking & Safety

The Mazda 3 tries to be the best hatchback when it comes to being equipped with safety features, which has some premium inclusions like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, brake override system, and adaptive front headlamps, along with electric parking brake, seven airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, traction control and electronic stability control.

Verdict

The Mazda 3 has successfully managed to be one of the most striking looking hatchbacks of all times, with a sense of richness in its both exterior and interior design and list of features onboard. The reliable mechanicals under the hood as well as superior chassis do make it a thoughtfully designed product as a whole.

  • Practical and spacious

Hatchbacks are going out of trend these days and I did not understand what we had to lose until I purchased the Mazda 3 Hatchback. I rented it for a week from one of my friends and was awe-struck by its merits. It is roomy and practical and offers exceptional fuel economy. I had no issue chucking multiple beach chairs, backpacks, and duffel bags into the cargo area of the Mazda 3 Hatchback. The Mazda 3 hatch does not have huge dimensions, but it can accommodate a wide range of items by folding down the rear seats. It also comes with good safety features.

  • Powerful, efficient, and comfortable

The Mazda 3 Hatchback is so fun to drive that I just find excuses to take it for a spin. It has enough torque and power and is very efficient. It takes corners, unlike any other car I have driven in my life. The passing power and acceleration of the Mazda 3 Hatchback seem like something out of a high-end car. The AWD and the turbo keep the car under control and planted when I aggressively step down on the accelerator. The car is peppy, and fun to drive and the engine remains very quiet and modest when I’m idling or driving normally.

  • Mainstream branded car that exudes a premium class flavor

This is one such model which might be originating from a mainstream brand like Mazda, but due its extra sweetening capacity this has been mistaken to be a premium class subcompact. They have appointed best of the best materials to decorate its interior section. The interior compartment unleashes a sense of style and effortless elegance thus. This is available both as hatchback and sedan body styles. You can get all wheel driving system no matter which of the type you opt for. Its fun filled driving streak will keep you amused throughout your journey. There is a wonderful balancing of compliant ride with nimbleness.

  • Pleasing driving dynamics

After driving a larger sedan for years, I wanted to downsize to a more compact and fuel-efficient vehicle that didn't sacrifice performance, and the Mazda 3 Hatchback impressed me with its outstanding fuel economy and quick driving dynamics. I'm impressed by the car's efficient engine and quick handling. Its interior exudes intuitiveness and simplicity. It makes my daily commute and weekend drives more enjoyable. I can hear mild engine noise during heavy and moderate acceleration, but it's not annoying. I won't trade it even for high-end cars.

  • An elegant and comfy vehicle

When it comes to the hatchback segment, the Mazda 3 hatchback sits on the top according to me. The KODO design language adds some innovative and appealing elements to the exterior which proves to be a head turner on the streets. As I own the top-end model, the cabin is blessed with goodies like keyless entry, heads-up display, leather seats, auto headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control etc. In terms of safety, the Mazda 3 hatchback is a reliable vehicle as the safety kit includes dual & side airbags, ABS with EBD, blind-spot monitoring, “smart” brake support and engine immobiliser.

  • the ‘coupe’ among premium hatchbacks

Being one of the very first owners of the Mazda 3 is indeed one special feeling for me in general. The Mazda 3 hatchback has somewhat managed to fulfil my dream of owning a coupe at a very affordable price point. Now, I might sound foolish to call the Mazda 3 a coupe, but I do find the extremely curvy and modern styling comparable to that of a traditional coupe. The sleekness with which the Mazda 3 has been designed is simply praise worthy, which gives it a striking individualistic identity for a budget car. Now, despite looking much like a coupe, the Mazda 3 is very much practical, with a great in-cabin space and comfortable ride quality. The very impressive build quality for a budget car like this is something which makes the Mazda 3 a sure shot thing straightly appealable to one’s heart.
